DIY Burlap Christmas Pillows

So me and burlap are like BFFs right about now.  We've been spending some major time together...most recently I created these cute burlap Christmas pillows.   They were super easy and fast to make and they're great for both indoors or outdoors.

Of course, I turned to my trusty Powerpoint to create the design. There are tons of free Christmas fonts out there on the good ol' WWW... so find your favorite, download it and install it into your font book...then get to work.  

I started with the 'Jingle' pillow inspired by Pottery Barn's jingle bell pillow.   When you're creating your design, leave a little space around the outside so you can sew it onto the pillow without stitching on the design.

When my design was ready to go, I printed it right on a piece of burlap.  If you're a loyal 2IY reader (you aren't? You totally should be!!!) you know the drill by now about how to print on burlap.  If not, it's cool I forgive you just go >> here << and learn how to print on burlap using your home printer.

Remove the burlap from the freezer paper and then sew around the very edge of the jingle piece with a zig zag stitch to prevent it from fraying.  Now, set it aside for a few minutes so you can work on the actual pillow cover.

The pillows I was covering were 16 x 16 so I created a pattern from a piece of wrapping paper.  It's
16 x 38 inches.  I laid it out on my burlap, nice and straight, and cut out my burlap.

Then I folded over the short ends of the burlap and ironed it before sewing a straight stitch to create a hem on each end.

 

Now fold the two ends up and over each other toward the center.  You want to make sure the square that you've just created is 16 inches.  Just iron where the two folds are so you kind of box out the middle.

Now it's time to add the 'Jingle' piece onto the pillow cover front.  Using a measuring tape, center the Jingle piece in the center square of the burlap between the folds that you created.   Mine is about 4 inches from each fold.  Pin it at 10 and 12 o'clock before lifting up the Jingle piece to spray some spray adhesive onto the back of it.  Then carefully press it down onto the pillow cover. (I apologize some of these pictures are from another similar project - I got a little carried away and forgot to snap a few shots while working on the Jingle pillow).

 

Remove the pins and sew a straight stitch all the way around the Jingle piece in that little space you created.

Lay your burlap piece out and with the Jingle facing up, fold the two ends over it so they are overlapping each other (the jingle will be covered!).  Sew up the edges and then flip the pillow cover right side out.

I sprayed the Jingle area with acrylic sealer to protect it in case it gets a little damp outside. If you're using the pillows indoors you can skip that step. 

I just love how these pillows came out.
