So I made over my bathroom...on a $100 budget!

You seriously have NO idea how excited I am to finally be able to show off my brand spankin' new powder room!  I couldn't be happier with how it came out especially given all the "firsts" I faced - wallpaper, beadboard, trim, building...  What makes me even happier is that I was able to come in under my $100 budget.  It's hard to believe looking at the before and after pictures that this could be done for less than one hundred buckos, but I assure you it was!

$45 Laundry Closet Makeover REVEAL (Before and After)

So there's good news and bad news. The good news is the laundry room/closet makeover is complete.  The bad news is the washer decided to conk out completely about 3.2 seconds after I added the final touch and now we are shopping for a new washer.   I really wasn't planning to take the laundry room makeover that far - after all I was on a $100 budget here - but when life gives you lemons you make lemonade  a broken washer the laundry piles up fast!

That being said....I could not wait a minute longer to finally reveal my new laundry room.

Laundry Room Update...This is NOT Going Well

I cursed myself!  Yesterday, on Instagram I shared this picture of the final touch in my newly made over laundry room.  The caption: "that's a wrap." Yeah, well guess what..the washer had other plans.

It honestly wasn't an hour later that I noticed a pool of water in the pan under the washer.  Are you kidding me?   This is not normal.  Water is not supposed to be in the pan. Don't get me wrong, it's better than it being all over the floor, but it's not supposed to be in the pan.  Something is leaking. Something had me sitting on the floor next to the washer with a turkey baster and a bowl for a good half hour sucking out water drop by drop.  (Not even joking...don't laugh!)  Something is holding up my big reveal! 

So today, instead of taking some gorgeous pictures of a newly made over laundry room (that I'm sure will never be nearly as neat as the moment it was snapped on film) to share on the blog, I will be dealing with finding an appliance repair man to come in and tear apart my laundry closet and figure out what is wrong with my washer. 

The washer is old.  I don't know how old, but it's likely not worth putting too much money into.  We will see what he says...but I'm pretty sure any repairs or replacements are going to push me over my $100 laundry closet makeover budget.  A new washer was not in the plan or the budget. 

The good news is at least I have about $50 to play with since the laundry room makeover, to this point, with a new light, new cabinet, shelving, decor, paint, and a wall mounted drying rack, didn't cost me much at all.

I Spy DIY: 7 Master Bedroom Ideas

Last week on the blog I showed off my newly refinished/repainted nightstand and got some great feedback from readers on it.  One of the biggest compliments was from a reader who asked if the headboard in the photo was purchased or made.  I'll give you one guess...

That got me looking at the photo, which at first glance doesn't look like much other than the nightstand.  But actually when I look closer I realize just how much blood, sweat and tears  love I have poured into our master bedroom since I started transforming it in the spring.   In just this one photo I spy FIVE DIY projects that I have featured on the blog...can you see them?

Okay, okay I'll give you a few hints (and all the links to the tutorials)...

Let's start with the nightstand because it's the most obvious.  It was painted two-tone to match the walls and trim and new hardware was added.

15 Minute Window Valance (and DIY coordinating accessories)

You guessed it...it's another addition to the $100 bathroom makeover.   This was actually an edit that I made after being unhappy with the original stenciled drop cloth valance I made.  The drop cloth curtain didn't cost me anything because I already had the drop cloth, but this guy only cost me $4.25 (the cost of half a yard of this gorgeous HGTV/Waverly fabric between a sale and coupon).  I'm certainly glad I splurged because this little piece of fabric makes the bathroom for me!

Unfortunately, I didn't take many any pictures as I made the new valance because I was kind of just wingin' it, but since I've had a few requests for the tutorial I'll try to explain how I did it as best as I can using a few graphics. 

The curtain rod (aka dowel) was already hanging over the window so the easiest way for me to measure how wide I needed my valance was to actually mark right on the rod the inside points were the rod holders hit. My window measurement came to 27". 

A half a yard is 18 inches and the fabric comes standard 54" wide on a roll, not a bolt.  Let the graphics parade begin...

Small Bathroom Storage: DIY Pallet Board hanging shelf

And here's another sneak peek into how my $100 powder room makeover is going.  The great thing about this guy is he cost me next to nothing!  I used all pallet wood and I had the screws and stain on hand.  I did have to purchase the rope and the hook at the top, but you can actually make this without either.  (My little secret is they're just for decoration, they're not actually keeping the shelf on the wall.)

The lovely ladies over at Shanty 2 Chic inspired me to make this shelf.  They built a similar one for that odd wasted space over the toilet.   The only difference is mine is pallet wood (free) and they paid for their boards (better quality).  I believe she said she still made it for about $10...which is still quite the steal.

Entertainment center to DIY storage bench

Hey guys Steph here...

We recently got a new entertainment center, but I had trouble selling my old one.  Instead of just throw it out I decided to re-purpose it into a DIY storage bench with storage slots underneath for baskets.  It's the perfect addition to our playroom and workout area.

The entertainment center was made of that really heavy - but not super great quality - fiberboard.  We actually disassembled it and then used some of the pieces to build a homemade storage bench.

The great thing about doing this is we could customize it to our liking - and all the pieces were already cut to size for us.

The entryway in our 50+ house is not exactly screaming for a table or bench..it's small and there's no real place to put anything.  A table in the hall would take up most of the walkway and with two little ones chasing each other 12 hours of the day I don't really want to risk it.

I recently got a small wood nightstand from my late grandparent's estate and fully intended to paint it and use it in my daughter's bedroom.  But when it came to painting it I made a rash decision and changed my plans.

Small bathroom makeover: $100 budget challenge

We have 2.5 bathrooms...and lucky for me (okay, not so much) all of them need some updating (don't get me started on the demo needed in the master or the total reno needed in the kids/guest room bathroom).

The main floor powder room will far and away be the smallest project and really just requires some DIY TLC.  The Mr. is all about hiring out - but I'm not trying to spend my kids' college fund on the rooms where my kids pee and poop all over.  So...I've set a very tight budget for the powder room: a mere $100.  Yes, I recognize the craziness of this, but I figure if I set it low and plan ahead I can do it.  Pretty much everything is cosmetic and I am pretty sure I can do it all myself.

Okay, so here's what the bathroom looks like now. (I was literally standing in the coat closet across the hall to take this picture.) It's the same as it was 2.5 years ago when we moved into our home (I do have an excuse for not updating it until now and that is that my youngest was born 3 WEEKS after we made the out-of-state move.)

I am a pallet virgin no more! I have finally completed my first ever pallet wood project and it's this awesome personalized wood sign that's now hanging in my dining room.  I got the pallet board from my aunt and it's been sitting in my garage for months waiting for me to make just this very thing.

But anyway....I digress.
